Fillo Apple Strudel

This is the quickest version – made with fillo pastry. May be prepared in advance and frozen. Use other fruit, if desired. Use more crumbs for juicer fruit. See the notes.

   

STEPS

INGREDIENTS

  1. Toss the apples with the juice or soda. Set aside.

3 cups (or 3) green apples, peeled, cored and

thinly sliced

lemon juice or lemon lime soda

  • In a small bowl, combine the crumbs, sugar and cinnamon. Stir. Set aside.
  • 3 T. white bread crumbs (or cookie crumbs)

    ¼ cup brown sugar, firmly packed

    ¼ t. cinnamon

  • Preheat the oven to 375 degrees, if baking now. Drain the apples. Spray and stack 10 sheets of fillo on a baking sheet. Sprinkle the crumb mixture on the fillo. Spoon the apples on the long edge, leaving 2" free on each end. Fold the ends in over the apples, then roll up into a long cylinder. Spray grease the top and sides and sprinkle 2 T. of sugar over the top. Freeze now if preparing ahead or,
  • 10 sheets fillo pastry (2/3’s box)

    1 can cooking spray (can be butter flavor)

    2 T. sugar

  • Bake for 30 minutes at 375 degrees, until golden brown. Remove the strudel from the oven and cool it for at least 30 minutes. Or hold it for up to a few hours before serving.
  •  

  • Slice and serve as is, or with almond whipped cream, whipped topping or vanilla ice cream. Chill any leftovers.
  • Best if served at room temperature.
